Like many Mexican-origin families, herbs, sobadas, and prayers were the first line of defense against illness in my home. My earliest teachers were the women of my family, whose kitchen-table lessons informed how I cared for my own children. My great-grandmother and great-aunt had provided for their own families as sobadoras (female massage healers), parteras (midwives), and hierberas (women who make medicine from plants), helping community members in Guanajuato, Mexico and the Chicago area.
It has been a lifelong interest for me to learn about traditional Mexican healing and culture and to honor those who have kept and keep these practices alive. This interest brought me to visit to Chichén Itzá in Yucatán, Mexico nearly twenty years ago. There I met a woman known in her local community to be a gifted curandera. Inspired to learn more, I began to study Yucatec Maya language and culture. Frequent visits to Yucatán helped me develop relationships with people I now call friends. It has been a true privilege to meet and interview several Maya curanderas as well as healers from Oklahoma, New Mexico,
and the Chicago area.
